Bearspaw Acreage Landscaping Portfolio
Video Transcript
We are in northwest Calgary at this beautiful custom home overlooking the Rocky Mountains to the west.
It was a challenging one to design and build the landscaping four because it's built into a slope and required a lot of retaining walls and grating to deal with the water issues on this site.
The site is higher at either end and low in the center, saddle shaped, which provided some great design opportunities.
The retaining walls were built out of large, blocky armor stone, which we had shipped in from Ontario, where it's quarried.
The whole house has been enveloped with low maintenance beds and the retaining to tie it to the site. It turned out really well.
These are steps made out of the same armor stone is the walls, providing a colour complement to the stone used on the house. The solid stone used throughout this project helps to give it the stately feel that was desired.
A great space, this large lower patio is partially covered by the upper deck, so it's out of the elements. Wind is obviously a factor on this site.
Out at the front, some more armor stone, security gates and there are extensive plantings in particular blocks of Colorado spruce, planted to provide winter interest and wind protection to protect the house from the north westerly winds.
All of the plantings were done in a low maintenance finish, as there are far too many beds here to be doing a lot of weeding.
In addition to the Evergreen, there are some strategically placed Swedish Columnar Aspen and Schubert cherry trees to provide contrast to the landscape.
Another priority for the homeowners was lots of space for the kids and dogs to play, and they really enjoy this property as much as we did developing it for them thing.
