This new build in Cranston is the third landscaping design and installation we have done for this family. The first project was a new build in 2000 that entailed an outdoor pool, spa and extensive landscaping when all the kids were still at home, and was much loved. The second home was an interim “empty nest” and this third home is once again a very busy family home with kids and grandchildren visiting regularly. The goal for this landscape was to have items that would make it the hub of family activity and the implementation had good timing, as during the pandemic when so many things were closed or unavailable, this garden became the family gathering place, even hosting an anniversary party event with an outdoor tent on the lawn.
As with most projects the design phase began with grading and terracing decisions. Major placeholders like the spa and putting green were positioned and a generous lawn was placed diagonally across the space to maximize play value. It is a popular spot for a slip-and-slide in the summer. Grade differentials in the garden were accomplished with Kodah walling and Dimensional steps creating terraces so each zone in the garden is flat.
One of the major elements of this garden is the swim spa. With less maintenance and smaller footprint than a full pool, this feature allows for hours of fun for the grandchildren and also functions as a spa for adults. By partially building the spa into the grade utilizing a pressure treated retaining wall skirted with composite decking, the overall size of the unit is softened, and it also makes getting in and out easier. The decking surround can be removed if required should a jet or other part of the spa require service.
Another element that sees use by all the family members is the putting green. The synthetic turf construction is durable, low maintenance, and looks great year round. It is a popular pastime and draws everyone out into the backyard for some activity and fun. We incorporated the water feature into the design and this element was created by the homeowner and his son as a family project. The patio next to the putting green has a portable firepit where a fire can take the edge off a cool evening for observers at the putting green, or to sit and overlook the pond and water feature. Patio spaces are done in Roman pavers for a classic look, low maintenance, and good footing in wet spaces, like around the spa.
Having a garden with lots of flowers and a long season of interest was also a goal for these homeowners. Roses, daylilies, salvias, helenium, and monkshood anchor the summer garden. With previous gardens to reference, we were able to incorporate favorite plants with some new ones to best achieve this effect in the new landscape. This property backs onto a greenspace and pathway, and receives many much appreciated compliments.
