Bonavista Landscaping Portfolio 002
Video Transcript
This property in Lake Bonavista was in need of a facelift when we arrived, with a rotting deck, overgrown shrubs, and a non-functional spa We were able to retain some of the existing mature landscaping, notably a large cut leaf weeping birch, which helped to maintain the mature, private feel of this garden.
In one corner of the property, we developed an outdoor fireplace with a gas insert. Adjacent to that is a cozy sitting area for four people to enjoy the warmth from the fireplace.
Bordering that patio is a putting green made of synthetic turf. This practice green is adequately sized for several players to putt, and close enough to still visit with other people, who can be by the fireplace or the dining area.
This turf is a durable surface, and can serve as an overflow for larger gatherings or parties as guest flow throughout the space. The overall feel of the garden is to encourage visitors to explore.
In the center of the backyard is a large dining area with an umbrella for shade. Beyond that is the spa, tucked in a back corner in a private intimate setting.
In the landscape design we eliminated the old deck, and instead created a landing and steps out of Belvedere block to get down into the garden from the back door. This enhances the privacy of the space by getting down lower, and improves the flow from one space to another.
The patio spaces are constructed out cobble pavers, a material that lends itself well to the curving nature of this natural feeling garden.
In the center back of the backyard is a pond and waterfall feature. The pond has a filtration system using a bio falls, and has a variety of marginal and aquatic plants, including water lilies, marsh marigolds and sedges When properly installed and maintained, these types of water features have clean clear water and a pleasing sight and sound. They also draw in many types of wildlife, like birds and beneficial insects This tranquil and functional garden is a joy to visit, especially to experience how it changes throughout the seasons.
